/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ************************************************* The Oxford English Dictionary - Second Edition - version 1.14 ************************************************* /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// This is the Second Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, a priceless record of the evolution & use of the English language. Originally posted over a dialup, I send my appreciative thanks to Doug for doing this the hard way (see other nfo). Essentially OED2 comprises just two files; setup.exe & OED2.dat. I burned the data file to the root folder of a CD & setup.exe to a Setup subfolder. Then ran setup.exe from the CD. During install, I didn't bother with the Word macro thingy - sounds nice but I don't expect it still works on Word X. This allows you to run from the CD. Use Daemon Tools to run from disk - see www.serve.com url below. OUP are doing a cheap upgrade to version 3, so if neologisms are your thing you might consider visiting their website to buy the upgrade - well, I tried! Problems? Amazon.com rated this 5-star for content & 0-star for software & I agree! However the main software problems have workarounds which are documented in excruciating detail at http://www.serve.com/xywwweb/oed.shtml . Here you can learn how to rescue fonts, mount the dictionary on a hard drive and overcome startup GPFs, all of which I have done successfully by following the instructions. I now have OED working on XP & a w2k pcs. If you're a 'tinkerer' you can do it: you will end up with an amazing resource, otherwise you might be best advised to leave it alone, as it may not work straight out of the box. Many thanks to R.J.Holmgren for a wonderful job.
Are you going to seed anymore? Seems tobe a few leachers out there with just a tiny bit left...they surely would appreciate it!
I can only answer questions posed in English!!
any chance of getting some more seeders for this?
please seed!
Don't waste your time dealing with these dictionary app's the have been upped by the software writers.
thanks for the upload, cheesman! The OED works perfectly.
all i needed to do was to dump the OEDXP.exe into the Program Files/OED directory, make sure that the oed.iso was mounted in the deamon drive from which i installed the dictionary, and use the OEDXP.exe to run the program!
the OEDXP.exe can be found on the website mentioned in the torrent description

The supplied oed program (v1.14) allows the db (oed.dat) to be mounted on the root directory of any drive. To achieve this you need to set environmental variable OED to the drive letter (no colon) as it says in the serve.com howto. cheesman
I know this sounds like the dumbest person on the earth, but I have tried in vain to kick in the oed as described and explained. Let me get this straight:
Install the program-I did. Copy the oed data file to the C: root drive--I did. Run the program--I did. Crashes!
I tried the Alcohol route as described but it does not create .mdf files, only .mds files. Huh?
Why cannot someone in clear unambiguous language describe step 1, step 2, etc. and save all of us from pulling our hair out. Sorry cheesman for the complaint.

OK, I finally got it going. download this, install it from Daemon or a burned disk. Download the zip file from smurfettes link. Also, download the available OED2exe file. This jump starts the program without the startup screen. Overlay those unzipped files into the OED directory. Install the fonts in the font folder into windows. Burn the OED data file onto a disk, which you keep in your drive. Run OED2EXE. Enjoy. Still can't get the data file to be read on the hard drive, though.
Who wants to shell out the cash for OED 3.1 or 3.1.1? Somebody's gotta, 'cause of the Vista problem. Mad props to whoever does.
Works and installs like a dream on Windows XP. Much faster to load and easier to search/browse for words (especially when unsure of spelling) compared to newer Version 3. Thank you cheesman for sharing!
This OED is a Godsend! Thanks cheesman.
Only problem I have is that I cannot scroll with my mouse wheel (this app only).

I find it perplexing that we are told to use cd, .iso, daemon and the whole arsenal of mind-boggling techniques to install this thing. It doesn't have to be such a rigmarole. I just clicked setup, copied OED2.dat to C drive, replaced the installed files with those that i found from the net (don't remember where), installed the fonts, & voila! It is good to go by clicking oedxp.
The beauty of it is that no iso image or cd is needed & you can run it straight from your hard disk.
